My family and I are on holiday in Bali, Indonesia, an Island with a diverse culture and incredible food. One of the challenges of family holidays is living within a budget and limiting overindulgence. It’s just so easy to sit by the pool and eat all the yummy food being served up.
As I’ve said before, staying healthy means (amongst other things) controlling your portions – something that is an inherent weakness in many of us – especially my husband, who if unrestrained will consume enough to feed a regular army. Once maybe-but for three meals a day-not good.
So, today, to try to minimize any deleterious effects on our health (and wallet) we tried something different. For lunch, we enjoyed a veggie wrap and swapped the fries for a baked potato.
The wrap was delicious, and because we shared the meal (½ a wrap and ½ a potato each) the potato with its butter and chives was guilt free. I have to admit it went down rather quickly and left me thinking is there anything else (Victor was checking the floor for crumbs).
We decided to wait a few minutes, to let our brains catch up with our stomachs it takes about 20 minutes – before ordering anything else. The next thing we knew, a few hours had passed, and it was happy hour. We never realized the time going and we weren’t hungry. The truth is, the small portion was the right size, given our larger breakfast, and was all we needed.
It’s now 6 pm as I prepare this post, I sit across from a fish pond and have no doubt that today was a healthy eating day. We might have fries tomorrow, we might not, it’s not about the fries, it’s about enjoying what you eat and limiting excess through portion control.
Today’s been a great day we’ve had lots of fun, good nutrition and exercise. Oh and our share of natural Vitamin D.
